Busy Mind

When people have to use their intellectual facilities throughout their working day, they are often unable to switch off and relax in the evening. Watching TV only serves to further stimulate a tired, overactive brain and some of the late night programs we watch can penetrate the subconscious and adversely affect our sleep, either causing nightmares, or wakefulness.

An overactive mind can also result from insufficient exercise, bad diet or eating too late in the evening. Any disagreement should, if possible, be resolved that evening – going to bed with an unfinished argument echoing back and forth in our mind is going to adversely affect our sleep. One of the most common causes of insomnia therefore is the inability to switch off the busy mind.

So many people’s lives are burdened by the countless tasks they must complete by next week. Trying to cope with life’s challenges by striving to THINK our way through them is very stressful and places a heavy burden on the body and mind – and seldom achieves any lasting solutions. When we learn to bring the mind to stillness and silence, the solutions that really work become revealed.

How is this done? I teach a technique called Mindfulness that greatly helps focus and quieten the mind. It clears away the mental static of too many future demands and brings our awareness to the present moment – right here and right now. When we focus on a single task we can complete RIGHT NOW, our lives become less cluttered.

I also teach simple relaxation and breathing techniques to quieten the mind and relax the body. Concentrating on a simple focal point, such as the sound and flow of our breath, has a very soothing, relaxing effect on the mind, and allows the body to enjoy a much greater quality of rest.
